St. Mark Church - 1905-2010

3500 Montgomery Road

Cincinnati, OH

St. Mark Parish, in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Evanston was founded in 1905.  The parish was staffed by members of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood from the very beginning.  Originally, a predominantly German-American communmity, the parish began to change with the construction of Interstate 71 and the movement of many people from this part of the city to the suburbs.  For many years, it was one of the most vibrant African American Catholic Communities.

The procession cross and ambo from St. Mark have found a new home at the Church of the Resurrection, along with a collection of African art and African American art.  The chairs in the gym also come from St. Mark.

The Church of the Resurrection continues to operate a soup kitchen and food pantry at this site.  Several organizations have expressed interest in purchasing the property.  However, at this time, the church, convent and rectory continue to be for sale.  It is hoped that the buildings will be put to good uses that will continue to serve the people of Evanstan and Cincinnati.

The Church of the Resurrection is also hoping to sell much of the sacred art at St. Mark to other churches that will use it to worship and praise our God.  Marble altars, paintings of the stations of the cross, bronze candle sticks and an altar crucifix, marble statues, stained glass windows and other liturgical items are all looking for new homes.

The statue of St. Mark that stood in the sanctuary at St. Mark for almost 100 years has a new home outdoors at St. Mark the Evangelist Church in Birmingham, AL.
