Norman J. Heard Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is named for our father, Norman J. Heard. Our father was larger-than-life. He was cherished as a father, friend, coach, parishioner, and dance partner.
He was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. He was called home to God on November 17, 2020; however, his legacy and impact
will continue to live on many people’s lives.
His legacy will live on through the creation of a named memorial fund that will provide a college scholarship to a parishioner of his home church, the Church of the
Resurrection to help them go to college. Our father placed a high value on education and would have loved to support a high school senior and athlete realize their dreams. These categories represent
the things that were near and dear to his heart, faith, community, sports, and education.
Our father’s athletic career started by playing for a Cincinnati neighborhood team known as the Jake Sweeney Tomahawks. He played football for Purcell High School
(Cincinnati, Ohio), where he was an absolute standout. His success as an athlete in high school would grant him the opportunity to play football at the University of Louisville (U of L) on
scholarship. Go Cards! He was a premiere athlete at U of L as well. He was named captain his senior year and unfortunately had a season-ending injury. However, our dad was not done with sports and
sports were not done with him. He moved on to his next athletic pursuits, coaching. And he started with coaching his kids and perfected his craft.
Where many would have viewed athletic success as the goal, Norman viewed it as a steppingstone to access education. He believed education was the ultimate granter of
opportunity. It is in that same spirit that we have set up the Norman J. Heard Memorial Scholarship, to give someone who knows the struggle of hard work and teamwork access to a greater
future.
We invite you to apply.
